How Anothers Talent Can Become Your Own

I know that just by reading the title of this article you are wondering, is it even possible to raise your talent abilities through others? In this article I want to discuss with you how another’s talent can become your own.

Think back with me for a moment to when you were younger and you followed your mom or dad around everywhere they went. Maybe you watched your mom cook amazing foods or work outside in the garden? Maybe you remember seeing your dad work on the car?

I learned a few great lessons that day!

When I was just a little girl, I loved watching my parents and always wanted to do everything that they did. I remember one particular time I watched my dad outside feeding our animals, and I wanted to be just like him. So when no one was watching I snuck outside so I could surprise my parents by showing what a ‘big girl’ I was.

I had always seen my dad use a big fork-like tool (pitch fork) to lift hay into the animals’ pen. But, when I couldn’t find it anywhere I decided that just using my hands would be fine. I grabbed the biggest handfuls of hay I could and ran over to the animals. Little did I know that the pitchfork was laying on the ground, buried under a thin layer of straw and hay and it was sharp enough to go right through my little flip-flops. I learned a few great lessons that day!

Haha my reason for this story is to show that by watching those around us, (usually those with more knowledge and experience) we are able to learn and grow.

Now how does this relate to playing the flute, you might ask? Listening and watching other flutists can help you to have a better trained ear and recognize ‘little things’ you can do to improve your playing. It DOES work.

If you don’t have the opportunity to listen to a live flutist around you, take some time to find and watch some videos online. As you watch more and more you will find yourself better able to critique your playing and abilities. This will help you to become an even better self-learner.

I would like to point you towards my Learn Flute Online lesson modules, as a great resource to watch, listen, and learn as you play your flute. I have thousands of videos ready to help you accomplish your dreams.

Good luck, and feel free to share some amazing flute videos you find in the comment box below.
