Question of the day How Long to Practice the Flute

I get a lot of really fun questions here at Learn Flute Online.

How long should I practice my flute each day?

Today’s comes from a 27 year old cutie from Mexico:

“I have listened that a lot musicians practice a lot of hours in a day (ex. 7 hours for perfect his art). However, i practice 1 hour a day. My question is: Should i practice more hours a day? ¿will be good that I practice 3 or 2 hours a day?”

My answer to her is:

“What a great question you have. I have many students who ask how long to practice the flute.

Some have practiced many hours per day.  They are the ones who are now at Julliard and Manhattan School of Music.  They have been very careful students.  Careful to practice only good technique.
It does no good to practice bad technique several hours per day, right?

My suggestion for my online students who are wanting to really excel, is to make sure and take regular private lessons from me so I can check technique and go over important points – especially tone and position.  I also invite these type of students to come to masterclass if at all possible once or twice a year.
Practicing for hours at a time with bad technique does one or both of these two things:
1. creates bad habits that cannot be easily fixed – this hinders playing on every level.
2. creates improper tension in muscles that can end up giving the player tendonitis or carpel-tunnel syndrome, etc.

Practicing for hours at a time with bad technique… does what for your playing ability?

After I have worked one-on-one with a student for a while, I can easily tell how much to recommend they practice each day.

p.s. a “casual” learner should practice 20 – 40 minutes per day.  A more serious student should practice an hour.  I don’t recommend more than that unless I can see what is really happening and check technique often.”

    1. I’ll always email out when you can participate in a master class or hangout with me and my teaching. Just make sure to stay on the email list. If you ever want to participate in a private lesson with me just email me a “Private Lesson Request” email and I’ll find a date for you. I hope to see you soon! 🙂

  1. Hi Rebecca,

Keep us updated on your next Master class. When should a student attend? When they are at the advanced level? Just curious. I know you live in Utah. Does a student, me, have to physically be in Utah to attend?
    Thanks,
    Elaine

    1. Hi Elaine – about the Master Classes. I guess it all depends on what “kind” of master class I’m offering… I do travel besides holding them here in Utah. It would be so fun to meet up sometime, wouldn’t it? In the meantime we can skype, facetime, or google hangout. I can help you learn how if you need, no worries. Anyone else wondering about this can email me and I’ll let you know what is available. Great question! 🙂

    1. Hey Linda, where do you live? What state are you talking about? I can give you an idea of the next public master class. I actually have one next week with a couple of other amazing guest master teachers as well.
