There are 3 types of beliefs that we need to look at when we set out on any journey – like the one you’re on here. If you’re listening, you know what I mean. You want to make beautiful music and have it enhance yours and those around you’s lives, but you’re not quite sure you have the right stuff to make it. Let’s dive in because this is a great subject for this new year!

If you’re listening today, then you know that here at Learn Flute Online we are ‘doing’ this and I, well, we have the best online learning flute program on the planet. I believe it, my members believe it, and together we are doing great things.

We are in the middle of our big Tone course right now that I run every year in January. It’s really quite fabulous and just chuck full of important information that every person learning, and playing the flute should know. It’s basically ten full days of intense tone work.. Meaning, information that dials in the skills it takes to actually sound really good on your instrument. It’s a consumable video series that I put together and add to every single year.

Many people take this course over and over year after year.. The information is that good. Now, if you haven’t yet participated in my signature Tone course, then you really ought to put it on your calendar for next January, because that’s the next time you’ll have the opportunity to join it.

One of the challenges flute players have is doing what it takes to sound good, so they feel more confident, enjoy their own music, and can get to the point where they can share it with their friends and family.. At least. Musicians make a huge impact on the people of our planet.

It’s true – the way music influences is incredible, and if you look at what has happened over the many hundreds and thousands of years, you can see the evolvement … and it’s really quite exciting.

Music has a way of touching the soul like nothing else can. It’s why you’re here, right? Because it’s a journey that is so deep and rewarding at the same time.

So today we’re going to break down 3 categories of beliefs that we might need to shift or change… the way we look at things.

Most people operate every day on the sensory level

Like what we hear, what we taste, what we touch, etc.  What we want to do is take a look at what we don’t always see right in front of our nose- take a step sideways and notice that there are other perspectives that shape our beliefs besides the sensory facts of the day.

Many people worry that they’ll never be good at their instrument… which totally surprises me, because in my experience – I’ve taken even wee babes and helped them mold their skills to a very mature and enjoyable state over a set of years. All it took was them showing up over and over and over,  and me keeping them on their success path.

So, here’s a side-tangent for a second: you know how we can practice a certain skill over and over and over and after time it becomes a habit? In fact, many and most skills that we work on become so simple that we don’t even think about them anymore. Like walking! It just happens automatically after a while. Let’s take an example of a finger pattern.

Now, in the earliest modules here at Learn Flute Online we have a challenge where I demonstrate slowly, and I should say precisely, how to move from the second octave D to C and back to that D again with the highest level of skill and precision that fosters good tone, balance, and intonation as well. And at first, it’s awkward and quite cumbersome for the student to even get to the first stages of making this finger exchange.

I know for a fact that many people worry they’ll never get past this. It’s an adult thing to worry you’ll never have the talent required to move through the levels. Why do you think I just mentioned that this is an adult thing? Well, I’ll tell you why. Because if I demonstrated and ask a young child to work on this, they would just do it out of duty and faith that I know what I’m talking about.

In fact, most of the time a younger child wouldn’t even need faith to continue working on the skill day after day.. They just would do it because they were told to. And you know, eventually they would be really good at it and never even remember a moment of doubting.

But, adults operate a little differently.. They’ve gone through enough years of life to have felt some disappointments and noticed that not everything comes easy to them.

Well, this is normal. Very normal. In fact, it’s more than normal. It’s just how life is set up. We all go through different learning curves to accomplish things.

So, if someone would just trust the process, the proven process I should say, set before them, perform the actions out of duty, and put the need for faith aside, I know that there wouldn’t be so many people who have started and stopped learning their favorite instruments on this earth.

So let me get back to my original point: the finger pattern we were talking about is awkward and slow at first, but after the time is put in and practiced enough times, the skill becomes second nature. You don’t even think about it again. You have the proper muscle memory to just ‘do it’ without effort.

What I’d like to parallel this to today, is our belief system. Like I mentioned, some people forget that their belief system is just another skill in life that needs to be practiced and molded.

Yes- what I mean here is that believing we can do something which gives us confidence to keep trying is a skill. At first we may have shaky belief… like.. “Yah, I don’t know, I’m pretty slow, I don’t think I’ll be good at this, should I keep trying?” But, after time and showing up over and over the skill of believing you’ll get there becomes second nature.

We move our awareness to a more conscious level and our willingness to continue showing up becomes no effort at all.

So that’s our first category today, it’s becoming aware of our beliefs… this is kind of a self-empowering thought, isn’t it?

Ok, this takes us to our second category which is our beliefs about what is actually possible for us and realising that wanting or desiring more for ourselves is a good thing.

I don’t feel bad about when I want something… In fact, I get really excited when I think about new possibilities.

So, what do you want?

If you had a genie, what would you ask for? And no, you can’t ask for a million more wishes. Haha write this down, if you could ask for anything, what would it be?

Then, the next question you get to ask yourself is if this is possible for “me”? Talking about you, yourself, is it possible for you?

Well, there isn’t an inbetween answer.. You’re either going to get a yes or a no. Maybe, sort of, kind of, .. those are No’s.

Have you ever heard the statement that you get what you expect?

So, do you believe this is possible for you?

If you don’t believe it is, then the actions you make in life will steer you away from your desired result, for sure.

Because this thing you want is going to require some things of you, some lessons, some challenges, and getting out of your comfort zone. And if you don’t even believe it’s a possibility for you, then why would you step up and try?

If we could get to the space that all things are possible all the time.. Then now we’re getting somewhere. Just take a look at what you wrote down. Is what’s on your paper there possible? Does anyone else have this or have achieved this on this planet? If so, then you know it is.

You are the sum of your choices right now.

If you keep moving, you’ll get there- eventually. Wherever there is is up to you.

What stories have you created that have deterred you from what you want? Take a moment and pause, and think about this for a minute. What stories do you have in your mind, that have stopped you, or swayed you, from what you really want?

This is especially good to do at the first of each year.

Believing that you didn’t get what you wanted is the same as a failure, that’s not the way to go. Not getting what we wanted all the time is just called life.

Quick successes are kind of bad teachers because failure is the stepping stone to meaningful success. It’s just how we have to learn, it’s our process here. Once we realize that, we will be more willing to step up to the plate and show up to learn something we don’t already know how to do.

The last one is belief about Y.O.U.  You are the inventor of your machine. This is a good one because more than ever we should realize that we really are in charge of our mood, our reactions, our time, what we put in our mouths. There are too many people operating from a stage of reactionary defense – thinking that everything is out to deter them day after day.

Well, I challenge you to again step aside and create time and space to go towards what you want. Because that’s the only way you’ll get it.

As far as playing a musical instrument really well like the flute, this is especially true – I can’t reach through the screen and press the buttons for you just as a physical trainer can’t help someone get in shape by doing their pushups for them.

You are the creator of what you believe you are. Take a second each day to listen to what you’ve told yourself you are. Do you ever say, “I am”?  Like statements such as “I am not fast enough” or “I’m not smart enough”… you created those beliefs. Let’s do some brain surgery on our beliefs this year. Show up for yourself. You deserve it.

Become aware of what we believe, believe it’s possible, and then believe that you are the maker of your reality.

This is what it takes to continue on the path to get what you want.

It’s true for me, it’s true for you. And no, we’re going to have most things just dropped in our laps because we wished for it.

We know we like music. We know music stirs something inside us that makes us come alive, dream bigger, and have more meaning. It’s so much fun that we get to band together  in this commonality.

Like Plato said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato

Keep on keepin on folks – you’ve got this!

It’s been fun to have this chat with you today. I always enjoy a deep dive into why we do what we do.. And I especially like talking about success and how we can become our best selves.

I also want to know what you think about these episodes.. Do you like these types of talks? I believe that they are necessary. Not enough people stop what they’re doing to figure out “why” they are doing what they are doing. Haha

Living life with intention is a great way to have a happy life.. And who doesn’t like to be happy?

I like to be happy.

I like to be around other happy people.

You are so inspiring to me. I am thrilled you are here. In fact, I’m going to stick with the “play you out” format and I’ll start adding some snippets of my performances for you because I know that one of the best ways to inspire desire for deeper thoughts is through beautiful music.

It’s what we do here, and you are on the journey with me.

Keep it up.
