How to Quickly Learn Your Flute Scales

Scales are a very important tool that every flutist needs in their repertoire. As you are first learning though, scales are often seen as one of those ‘boring’ tasks you have to add to your practice schedule before you get to the good stuff. Sound familiar?

In this article I want to teach you how to quickly learn your flute scales so that you will be better prepared for the music in your future.

It will take dedication and some self-directed ambition.

First, I should tell you that here on my website in the Premium Membership Area, I spend time throughout the lessons teaching each of the scales one by one. I also introduce the Circle of Fifths. Have you ever heard of that?

My point in mentioning this is to let you know that much like any of the other techniques in learning how to play the flute, scales take time and patience. I’m not saying that you won’t be able to learn your scales quickly, I’m just saying that it will take dedication and some self-directed ambition.

To get started, focus on one scale at a time. As I introduce the scales to beginner flutists, I usually begin with the easiest ones and work my way up. Some of them are only learn partially for a while as we grow our technique. For the flute, many find the simplest scale is the C Major scale because it contains no sharps or flats.

Start by learning just one octave, and then add the arpeggio. In my experience, the quickest way to learn a new scale is to start verrrrrry slowly, make sure it’s correct, then play it to a set rhythm and memorize it.  Add a new scale weekly following the same pattern you used in the first scale, and you’ll be golden in no time!

Once you are able to play all 12 Major scales in one octave with arpeggios, time yourself. How fast can you play all 12 scales cleanly? Get yourself to the point where you can play them all under 60 seconds.

Now it’s time to move on to 2 octave scales with arpeggios. Follow the same method you have been using and push yourself. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish!

It is so fun to share our accomplishments with others. Let us know how you are doing with your scales this month. Good luck 🙂

  1. What would you recommend for someone trying to “relearn” after a 23 year break. Last time I played was high school. Starting my PhD journey and want my creative outlet back.

    1. Hi Jes, congratulations on your decision to return to the flute after a long break. You can do it! And I am here to help. I have taught many returning flute players of all ages and stages. My first advice to you is to make sure your instrument is in top playing condition. Often times returning flutists pick up their instrument after many years and are discouraged that they can’t play like they used to. One of the top reasons for this is simply because their flute needs a tune up. Take your flute to a technician to check the flute pads and mechanism. Next I would encourage you to find an instructor! Lucky for you, here at Learn Flute Online I have the perfect place for returning flutists to learn new techniches, challenge themselves, and continue their flute journey. Again I am so proud of your decision to return to flute! Let me know what I can do to help. -Rebecca
