Nervous Traveler-

Update to this post below:  (I’m back!)

Maybe I had better let you in on a fun teaching trip I am taking in a couple of weeks.

I am going to teach flute in AFRICA!

I am going to teach flute in AFRICA.  Oh, you can bet I am excited!

I really had no idea it took so much to prepare for a humanitarian teaching mission like this.  I am thrilled and cannot believe the wonderful opportunity I am going to be allowed.

But, despite my excitement I am really nervous about taking my instruments to this land.  I’ll be traveling across the world to Ethiopia and making my way down to visit some wonderful people who I hope will welcome my son and I on our adventure.

We will not only be performing many times musically, but we get to teach at the University, High Schools, and several Elementary schools as well.  The schools are not like the ones I know here in America.  We will hold class in mud huts, under trees, and in cement buildings as well.

I will be traveling with my flute and guitar…

Are you a nervous traveler with your flute?

I will be traveling with my flute and guitar, and I hope to share knowledge I gain along my way with you, my online musical friends.

Watch for videos, pictures and posts about my adventure, … and wish me luck!

Rebecca

UPDATE:

I went to Africa already!!!  It was very, very interesting.

The people there live so differently than I do here in the U.S.

Here is a picture of me at a school I donated supplies to – they were so sweet!

I learned what bananas look like when they are growing (we don’t have anything like this in Utah!)

Loved watching the children tend to their animals in the remote villages…

Introduced “balloons” to a whole village of children… so much fun for them!

I ate “Enjera” for basically every meal. – SPICY HOT but so good!

And met the most beautiful girls on the planet.  🙂

All-in-all it was an amazing trip.

I will never forget the beautiful people of Ethiopia.

Their music was really, really great.

AND, they loved my hair.  haha  🙂

I’ll have to make a video of some of the traditional playing I was able to see while there.

So Great!

  2. I just returned from my brother’s wedding in Karamoja (SE of Kenya) at a remote peace village that was, for many years, the site of raiders, gun battles, and death. They are as primitive as the American Indians were in the days of Columbus. No paper or plastic and just live off the land. Your photo of the child with the cows is similar to those I have. One of the big, sad, things is that they really have no instruments or music. They dance and sing, but no instruments. I too thought how wonderful they would have thought the flute (if only I knew how to play it for my brother’s wedding). Thank you for sharing your adventure. It is, indeed, an interesting place to visit.

    1. Thanks for sharing, Leigh. I had a wonderful trip. What amazed me the most about the performances I did was that the people did not have the attention span to listen to even a whole song. We shortened everything so they wouldn’t get up and walk away. SO different from where I live!

  3. Your trip to Africa is a very nice example for the saying: music brings people together. Thank you for sharing some the impressions of the Africa-trip with us.

  4. UPDATE: I”m BAAAAACK. It was super cool! I’ve added to this post so you can see some of the things I loved about the adventure.
