How to Choose a Flute

Everything You Need to Know

One of the most common questions I receive from those learning how to play the flute  is how to choose a flute.

  • Used Flute? Is it alright?
  • New Flute?  What is the best flute to buy?
  • What are the feature choices? What do they mean?

Excellent!! You certainly were a HUGE help when I was doing my flute shopping. A year later, and I am still tickled and delighted with my lovely flute. It has turned out to be everything I wanted, and so much more.

Thanks! You are the pro.

Introduction Video Transcript:

Well, whether you’re just starting out as a brand new flute player, looking to upgrade from your current instrument, or shopping for someone else (like your child, your wife, husband, or a girlfriend for example), purchasing a flute can be quite a daunting experience once you realize the different variables that go into it.

So I’ve created this extensive video series page that will guide you through the things that you need to know about and consider when choosing the right flute for your own unique situation.

Hi, and welcome to this page.

For those of you who may be new to the Learn Flute Online website, my name is Rebecca Fuller and I’m the owner and instructor of the Learn Flute Online programs where people of all ages, such as you can come and learn how to play the flute in an easy, organized manner, in the comfort of your own home and on your own schedule.

Now today I wanted to introduce to you this page and the subject is all about acquiring an instrument.

The reason I’m introducing this to you so formally as my online flute learning community is because.. well this is for you and I’ve been asking and compiling hundreds of questions that you flute learners sent me about choosing a new flute.

Now here are some examples:

Maybe you found or are borrowing a flute? How do you know if it’s any good?

Are you thinking of renting a flute? What questions should you ask and what can you normally expect from that company that you’ll be renting from?

Buying a new flute? Whether in store or online there are a number of factors that you should know about. There are different levels of flutes and models and makes. Different brands.   There are beginner levels, intermediate and advanced levels and beyond. There are different price points as well.

Within each of those there are different companies, and like I said, price points, and we’ll get into the nitty gritty with all that.

Now I sent this question out to about 36,000 learning flute players and I received a lot of great feedback. So thank you to those of you who participated.

Now, many of these students are already part of the membership area here at Learn Flute Online, and even with all that flute specific skills and tunes, exercises, studies, PDF sheet music, and MP3 audios, accompaniments, and even some practice tracks (quite a few of them in there that I have added in the membership area), I could see that there was still a need for an entire section online here to help us all get situated and comfortable with choosing a new or used flute.

So if you haven’t already, leave your comments and questions here on this page. I’ll be putting all of this information in queue so you can find the answers in an upcoming video.

Now hopefully you are already on my email list so that you can get notified when new information is released and all of the things you need to know to learn how to play the flute really well.

Now, if you’re not on that list then now is the time to enter your info on this page. Be sure to use an email that you check often. Check the junk box and the promotions box and make sure that you add me as a safe sender because that’s where your info will end up and in your inbox.

There’s so much to learn, I can’t wait for all the fun. A new instrument is one of the most exciting parts of being a musician for sure.

Thanks so much for being here today, we’ll be seeing you soon.

Go look at all your options above.
