You’re probably wondering what Flutes, Cars, and Sunshine have to do with each other.
Actually, this is a very important article for anyone learning how to play the flute. I’m sure you don’t like to throw your good money away by having a mishap such as the one described in this article. So, flute learners; read on. You’ll be so glad you did.
There are many times when you’ll need to transport your flute via car somewhere. One thing you may not have thought about is that leaving it in there while you are out on an errand is probably one of the worst places for it to be. Flutes cars and sunshine do not mix!
Your flute will literally fall apart.
Think about it: temperatures in vehicles can climb 50 degrees in a matter of just minutes. It gets hot enough to not only wilt your pets and children, but your flute will literally fall apart as well.
The pads under the keys on your flute are “glued” on. When temperatures rise above a certain degree, the glue begins to melt and your pads don’t stay where they are anymore. Uh Oh.
This is a VERY expensive fix.
I have always taken very good care of my flutes, and I make sure that my students understand the important details that keep their instrument in superb condition as well. This not only saves money (think: little or no repairs), but also saves so much time.
It is extremely inconvenient to have to take your flute to a technician (flute hospital) for renovation. Sometimes these technicians don’t have time to work on your flute for over a week. This means a lot of lost practice time for the flutist. No bueno!
If you feel it is warm enough that you wouldn’t leave a child, pet, or a super-fancy chocolate bar in your car then it’s definitely not the time to leave your flute in the vehicle as well.
We lived on our yacht for many years and was always very careful about how I put flute away. There is some damage to the plating but otherwise ok. Salt atmosphere not good either. Had not thought of the damage 50° might cause. But seems to be ok.

Oh my….this is a great tip! I live in Arizona where the daily high temperature is 110 or more during July and August. I just bought a new Gemeinhardt student flute, and now I know not to leave it in a hot car! Thanks for that tip!
