Flute in Church

The older I get the more thankful I am that I chose the flute as an instrument I wanted to excel at. Β It is the most perfect instrument for worship services.

I have been able to use my talent literally hundreds (maybe pushing thousands) of times!

I feel a responsibility to help bring the spirit into the meetings and feel honored to be able to be a part of it.

I am very careful when it comes to piece selection for church services. Β The numbers I chose are always either reverent, soothing, or joyful depending on the occasion.

Some religions limit what can be performed in meetings, and for good reason. Β Each religion has an objective for the meeting and as an instrumentalist, I want to always add, not detract.

I really do cherish and love each and every performance, no matter the faith. Β It’s really quite cool to see how music is presented and incorporated throughout the different faiths.

One things I have always felt a responsibility for is to make sure I pass on a new “generation” of flute in church-performing musicians. Β There are many ways to celebrate and share your talent as a musician. Β This is such an appreciated way, and participants in the services always feel so grateful when they have the privilege of relaxing to your beautiful music.

I always put my heart and soul into it, and I’m sure the congregations have enjoyed and felt of the “spirit” of my instrument as well.

P.S. if you feel compelled to agree that music is important in religious services as well,

Have any questions? Comment below and I will help you out.

I agree that piece selection for church services is very important to the overall effect that is being sought. That’s why I play different instruments for different themes especially as a soloist. For example, I prefer to play the clarinet or saxophone for “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and “Under the Care of My God the Almighty.” I prefer to play the violin for hymns such as “Nearer, My God, to Thee,” “God Himself Is with Us” and “Be Thou My Vision.” I play the trumpet for hymns such as “When the Roll Is Called up Yonder” and “God of Our fathers, Whose Mighty Hand.” And I play the pan flute for hymns such as “Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted.” I play the harmonica for hymns such as “Amazing Grace” and “Sweet Hour of Prayer.” I play the concertina accordion for hymns such as “I Will Sing of My Redeemer” and “Nothing but the Blood.” And of course there is Rebecca’s instrument of choice–the western concert flute. For this instrument, I play hymns such as “This Is My Father’s World,” “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed” and “As the Hart Longs for Flowing Streams” πŸ™‚

    1. Ahh, perfect comments here, Christopher. It would be nice to be able to play fluently on all of these instruments. Some church actually have guidelines that must be followed as to which instruments can be played in the chapels… so it’s always best to just know where you are and what’s appropriate. Thanks for the comment. I love all these melodies as well. πŸ™‚ ~Rebecca

I have been a part of a worship team for over 20 years and spent five years playing in a band doing Christian rock & roll. I primarily play guitar, but also play bass, a little keyboard, and a variety of world percussion.

I’m working on the flute to add that to the mix. Since I played sax as a kid, the fingering is very similar, and that’s helped. What I need is just more practice. Fortunately, I have a music studio in the home.

    1. Hi Randall, great! You’re going to have a good time learning from the lessons here at Learn Flute Online. They’ll get you in ‘good skill and sound’ in a big hurry. Let me know if you have any questions about the membership areas or even the Hymns course and Club. ~Rebecca

  3. HI, I am looking to buy a flute so that i can play in Church with other team. So can you please suggest which note/tune flute to buy.

    1. Hi Vikas, yes I can help you. If you’d like to purchase the flute like I play and am teaching on this website, you’ll want to find a ‘concert flute’. Sometimes it is called by other names: “Transverse” “Classical” “Silver” “Boehm Style” This flute is in the key of C and has many keys. It is chromatic as well. Let me know if you need more help. ~Rebecca

I started to learn flute with Rebecca because, although I had taught myself to play a little, my goal was to be good enough to play in church. We have a music group at church, and it’s a great way to be able to play with others, without any real pressure. Opportunities for older adults to play with others are quite limited – most bands, orchestras etc, quite rightly demand a high standard before they will allow anyone to join them. But I can play a few simple hymns already, and really love it! I am so grateful to Rebecca for all the tremendous work she has done in creating this wonderful online course.

    1. You’re very welcome, Kathleen. We are all thrilled to see you here in Learn Flute Online. It’s a super great community of flute friends. See you in a lesson soon! πŸ™‚ ~ Rebecca

  5. Hi Rebecca, I just want to say thank you for the way you open the door for flutist of all ages to hone and learn new skills. I’ve played flute in church for over 25 years but never knew where I could go to to be more skillful. I never had formal training, but have a good ear. That saying, I was always fearful of reading music–I would just clam up. After taking your free intermediate lessons, I find that it so easy to understand–you explain everything so well. I’m signed up for the Irish music lessons and can’t wait to get started. When I have more time, I plan to jump in to more lessons.
Knew you played in church, because of your sweet spirit.
    Thank you
    p.s.
I presently teach painting in church services and will have a new website up and running soon. Can’t wait to share about your site in my blog.

    1. Ah, gee thanks Theresa. You’re a sweetie. If you haven’t taken the Hymns course, you really should. You’d love it! ~ Rebecca

  6. I am the worship leader in our Nazarene Church. I can not tell you how much I love music. I enjoy selecting and praying about what God wants used in his services. My daughter plays the violin and does so in church, periodically. I played the flute in middle and high school….many moons ago…..LOL. I recently decided to pick it up again to add to some of the services. I look forward to “re” learning the flute. Believe it or not, I can still remember some of the fingerings! Yea!

    1. Hi Tonia, I’m so glad you understand what music can do for people. I am SO happy you are ready to get playing again. And, I think you’ll do well with my program- you’ll be playing in your worship services very soon I’m sure. πŸ™‚ ~ Rebecca

  7. I love going to church, just started going back to church in our small town, and the pianist decided to play her flute one morning recently, I was looking at getting a second instrument for myself, I thought clarinet, but once I heard her play I couldn’t stop thinking about the flute, I love flute being played in services, really adds a new dimension to things. Anyway I have just brought myself a reconditioned Jupiter. And the flutist is willing to teach me as well, so between the lessons I learn here and my teacher friend, I can’t wait to get started and playing the worship songs for myself, thank you again.

    1. I’m so excited you’re learning to play the flute Karen. And, you have a great motivation. There are actually quite a few people just like you learning from my online program. Smart! You’ll do great. πŸ™‚ ~ Rebecca

  8. Very true Rebecca.thank you for this article , very appreciated point of view…. I think music is rather essential in religious service. If religion is all about ” knowing God” , well, hey, music is the word of God. Playing music makes you be aware of your self , of your body, and aware of the present moment , that sacred moment when you hold your breath and then let the air go out from your inner peace to magically transform into beautiful melodies, not worrying about the past or the future. Only in the ” Now ” state. What is even more sacred moment is listening to and be aware of the “silent of music” between each note. This Silence that all melodies start from and dwell into it… This is awareness… This is music…This is Love… This is God.

    1. Thank you for your insight. Music is made of heavenly vibrations. Vibrations are what make the universe and heavens turn together. πŸ™‚ ~ Rebecca

  9. Michele Johnson

I have always wanted to play the flute. I purchased a brand new one (Yamaha) back in 2004. Well, then life got in the way, 1 marriage and 2 moves later, I have finally pulled it out of the closet and I am ready to fully commit to learn. I had been playing in the hand bell choir at our church and so I have a little bit of experience with note reading, but still relied on coloring the notes I was to ring. Playing in this ensemble has not been fulfilling as I can only play on Sunday morning performance days (every other month). I want more. I want to be able to play whenever I feel like it – home, holiday gatherings, and maybe even someday at church. My life is very busy, so I am considering learning through your website and happy to see your Facebook Page.

    1. Oh awesome, Michele. We welcome you to Learn Flute Online. You’ll find an awesome community of flute-learning friends right here for you! Also, I have A LOT of information for those aspiring to play in church. You’ll love it! ~ Rebecca

  10. Hi, yes, I play at church. I play with a classical guitarist. We accompany the hymns, as well as play parts of the Mass. Occasionally, we play an instrumental. As a matter of fact I have been practicing so much that I have fallen off practicing for Learn Flute Online. Not good! Perhaps this little wake up call will get me back online. I hope so, I really enjoy it and have learned a lot. The lessons are very well structured and organized, Rebecca’s the best!…

    1. Thanks Jim! Looks like I”m doing my job well if you’re performing with your accompanist already. You haven’t been with me forever. πŸ™‚ Keep at the modules because they’ll only make you better and better. Love You Jim XOXO Rebecca

  11. I am a churchgoer and I really admire the musicians who can play by air. I can play by air the melody of most of the songs we sing in church however I cannot improvise or accompany. I hope this will come the more experienced I become. There is nothing more beautiful and uplifting than hearing a flute in a praise and worship service. You feel like you’re on your way to heaven!
