3 tips for getting your flute playing to the next level

There is a time in every musician’s life when they really just want to be better than they are. It happens to everyone.  There seems to be an sixth sense in a flute-player’s bones that is always striving to be better. This article will help you get your flute playing to the next level.

Perhaps you are a newer or returning musician and really working on your flute-playing skills right now.

You may find that although you can play tunes on a certain level well enough, you just know there’s more inside of you that you want to learn to let out.

This article will give you 3 hints that will help propel yourself over the wall and into the next level of musicianship.

1. Resolve to find a regular schedule for practicing daily.

I can’t stress how important this is. Of my most successful students, those who have excelled the most have been those who stuck to a practice schedule.

I think it’s a little bit like running. Once you get your shoes on and walk out the door, it just seems to happen. And, you’re always glad you went.

Schedule the time. Get a baby-sitter and don’t take phone calls. Once your shiny flute is out and you’ve done your warm-up you’ll be shifted into the right gear for learning and enjoyment.

Play a happy tune first and last to feed your mood!

2. Work on practicing ‘smarter’.

Most people think that learning to play an instrument well has everything to do with learning longer and faster songs and nothing to do with tone studies and skill practice.

Hmm. I’m here to tell you it’s the opposite.

Get on the wave of fabulous skill learning. Add it to a daily regimen of consistent practice and you’ll be king.

3. Start strutting your stuff.

Now that you know how to get your flute playing to the next level, your flute-playing skills will soar. You just need to start learning how to show them off.  It’s not easy for most at first, though. Plan on having a couple of teetery moments. You’ll shoot up the ladder of success as soon as you figure out that ‘over-learning’ and preparation is the way to go.

Of course there are many other ways to take your flute-playing to the next level, and we will be exploring all of them in the Learn Flute Online programs.

I am thrilled for your enthusiasm for the beautiful instrument flute, and can’t wait to see you at your next lesson.

Take care, I hope you enjoyed this article.

  1. Hi Rebecca! I think you are totally right. but I do have a question: I am starting High School, and though I am homeschooled, I often have a hard time finding time to play the flute. I am given 30 min on fridays as a part of school, but I really want to play more than that. my question is, will it urt me to play lots on one day, and none at all for another three days?
I love performing because I am so used to it. I have been practicing ballet for 10 years scine I was 3, and I have had many performances. Is there a way that I can perform, not just at home, but for others? I think one way is to put my playing on YouTube, but do you have any other ideas?
    Thanks so much!

    1. You can always put your playing ‘out’ there, Clarebugg. Music enhances the world mostly when shared. I love that you have paired ballet with flute for your choice of hobbies. Perfect! Think of this scenario; is it better to practice ballet for 10 hours in one day or 2 hours per day for 5 days per week? Which would actually be best for your body’s learning? The obvious answer is that spreading it out creates the correct muscles and memory for good habits and easier playing the next time. I’m sure you can see that it is the same for learning to play an instrument. Perfect questions. 🙂 ~Rebecca
