100 Days of Flute Practice

Every year beginning on January 1st I ask my studio to begin a 100 day contest. Β During this contest students must remember to practice each and every day without missing a single one.

Hard?

For some. Β But, you’d be surprised at the number of winners I have each year. Β The first year was a test to see who could actually do it, and of the 30 students I challenged I had 2 winners. Β I gave them each a colored CD players. Yah, cool.

Guess what happened the second year I started the same 100 day practice challenge? Well, I’ll tell you. I had 13 winners! Β Wow. 13 of the students who took flute lessons from me didn’t miss a single day of practice for 100 days. And, I had to fork out a lot of prize money. But, I didn’t mind at all because these students all became super stars in the area of flute.

True story.

My husband even did it one year (learned the harmonica!). Β I always offer an awesome prize, and a celebration of the accomplishment.

What can you accomplish in 100 days? Β A Ton!

Look at it this way. Β If a certain student practices 3 days a week for a whole year that would add up to about 168 days. Β With 197 days not practiced. (boo)

During this contest students must remember to practice each and every day without missing a single one.

While it is totally possible to have learned some great things during those 168 days, there were so many “off” days in between that the skills being learned would have to be re-learned over and over during those good days.

With 100 in a row, skills can be built on rather than forgotten and re-learned over and over. Β It’s a pretty simple equation.

100 days in a row = Much quicker mastering of skills

100 days over a period of 300 days = Hard remembering and skill loss
